Practice paper – unfamiliar texts

This article written by Sharron Stephenson discusses the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. The writer clearly enjoys her work but it is very easy to notice that she does not enjoy the typical office job being stuck with a “boss breathing down her neck”. She shows her dislike of her previous work places by using metaphors and imagery. I believe she uses these same techniques to describe the advantages of her new work place.

During this piece I have noticed a metaphor that symbolises her discomfort at her old working environment. She quotes. “Without a boss breathing down my neck”. Obviously her boss wouldn’t have been physically breathing down her neck but it provides us with a thought of always having someone looking over her which she does not like as she is a grown woman. We can also see the discomfort this may give her because it paints a bold picture of an old hairy sweaty old man breathing down her neck with his wet warm breath which is clearly a disgusting feeling.

Another way that this article discusses the writers attitude towards her work is though the use of listing. Stephenson writes, “irritating colleagues, fluorescent lighting and a tedious, expensive bus commute spent stuffed under someone’s armpit.” Through the use of this listing she explains some of the negative aspects of her old office job. Stephenson gives us an image of some of the most annoying things that people may think of when going to work which can make us connect personally to this text. She writes on a level which everyone who works in an office can relate to and always uses gross analogies to describe this day to day job.

Throughout this text she has given me an emotional insight as to what an office job would be like as I do tend to enjoy working at home and doing things in my own time. This has helped me respond better to the text as it really paints some pictures in your head which gives it that emotional feel.
